First dig around the stump to expose the roots, cut through the major roots, and then use leverage to pry out the entire stump. Helpful tools for this task include: a pick mattock, a shovel, a digging bar, and an ax.

If you choose to rent a stump grinder it is important to consider the size stump because there are many different size stump grinders ranging in power from 5 to 100 horsepower. Most smaller stump grinders only grind to ground level. If you want to plant grass after having a tree stump removed, then the stump will most likely need to be taken down at least 6″ into the ground. Ask the company you rent the grinder from for their advice on what to size grinder to use. And most importantly keep in mind that a stump grinder is a dangerous piece of equipment–always follow the instructions and wear protective gear.
