Landscape Calculator
Enter your project dimensions in the calculator below to get an estimate of materials needed.
What is a cubic yard?
Cubic yards measure three-dimensional volume, for example a pile of mulch might be 2 yards wide & 2 yards long, but it is likely at least a yard (3 feet) deep.
One yard is equal to 3 feet (or 36 inches). A square yard measures two sides (length x width). A square yard gives you the area of a space for your landscaping project. For example your lawn might measure 10 yards on one side, and 30 yards on the other. This gives you an area of 300 square yards.
A cubic yard includes depth. So the length x width x height. Depending on how deep you want your mulch, river rock, compost, gravel, etc.
calculating cubic yards will help you figure out how much landscaping material you will need for your project.
How to calculate landscaping materials
To get started, first measure the area to be covered. Then consider how deep you want the landscaping materials to be.
Typically mulch and gravel under 1-1/2” in size will need to be 2-1/2” deep. Gravel 1-1/2” to 2” will need to be 3” deep, and 2” to 4” gravel needs to be 4” deep.
Using these depths in the landscape calculator below will ensure complete coverage so you cannot see the landscape fabric (weed-barrier) through the gaps.
*Be sure to convert all measurements to inches before entering them into the materials calculator.
