What is Decomposed Granite?
Decomposed granite is similar to gravel, but it’s finer and, in general, more stable. It’s formed from the natural erosion of solid granite, a hard igneous rock. It can be great for all sorts of front yard landscaping projects: patios, driveways, paths, walkways, garden trails, or xeriscape ground cover.
The qualities that make decomposed granite great hardscape material are:
– It’s soft, natural appearance.
– Makes smooth transitions for landscaping.
– It’s permeable and provides good drainage.
– It’s aesthetically versatile.
– It makes excellent mulch material.
– It’s inexpensive.
– It reduces dust.
– It’s low maintenance.
There are two basic types of decomposed granite – loose and stabilized.
Loose decomposed granite is a great option in garden beds for mulching or edging, because it is rich in organic materials and minerals. But it can be easily eroded and with heavy rain, it can become very muddy.
Stabilized is more expensive, but is less vulnerable to erosion. This version is better suited for walkways, garden paths and patios.
With either variety, it is best not to install decomposed granite directly near doorways. It sticks to shoes and can be tracked into the house, where it makes a mess and can scratch hardwood floors. Different surface materials are recommended as needed nearer to the house, such as steps or a doormat.
